Communication Skills and Strategy

Communication skills are essential for effective leadership, and there are different types of communication skills that leaders must master to effectively communicate with their followers (Ationg et al., 2021). These communication skills include verbal, nonverbal, written, listening, and feedback. However, as I will show below, I believe that tone is actually one of the most important communication skills that a leader can have. I will say more on that in a bit, but first I will discuss the typical communication skills that most scholars agree are vital to effective communication.

Verbal communication involves speaking clearly and effectively to convey messages to others. Leaders should be able to communicate their thoughts and ideas in a way that is easy to understand and meaningful to their followers. Nonverbal communication involves body language, facial expressions, and tone of voice. Leaders must be aware of their nonverbal cues and use them to convey confidence and sincerity.

Written communication involves the use of written materials such as emails, memos, and reports. Leaders should be able to write clearly and concisely, using appropriate language and grammar. Listening skills are also critical for leaders as they must listen actively to their followers, understand their concerns, and provide appropriate feedback.

Feedback is the final communication skill that leaders must possess. They must be able to provide constructive feedback to their followers, both positive and negative, to help them grow and improve their skills.

To be an effective leader, it is essential to have a communication strategy that incorporates these different types of communication skills. One such strategy is the R.A.P.I.D model, which stands for:

· Relevant: Communication must be relevant to the situation at hand.

· Accurate: Communication must be factual and accurate.

· Purposeful: Communication must have a clear purpose.

· Informed: Communication must be based on facts and knowledge.

· Direct: Communication must be straightforward and to the point.

Leaders in the Bible also used effective communication strategies. One such example is found in Proverbs 15:1, which states, "A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger."

I chose this passage because to me it emphasizes the importance of tone: it is not just what we say in communication but also how we say it. Words can inspire action, but tone can inspire feeling—both negative and positive. This passage emphasizes the importance of using a gentle tone and approach when communicating with others, especially when dealing with conflict. As a leader, it is crucial to remain calm and composed, even in challenging situations (Forster et al., 2020). By using a gentle tone and approach, leaders can diffuse potentially volatile situations and promote understanding and cooperation among their followers.

It is often the case that tone in communication is ignored when we speak about communication skills—but it is really a vital aspect of how to speak with purpose and power (Bruning et al., 2020). Imagine a leader who always says what is relevant and accurate but always has an irritable tone. That leader is not going to be very beloved by followers. Irritable tones agitate and discomfort people. Leaders who use them show agitation within themselves. They are not going to inspire strong followership.

However, I believe that tone is an essential communication skill for a leader to have because it sets the overall mood and atmosphere of the communication, which can impact how the message is received by the audience. Tone refers to the inflection, pitch, and emphasis placed on words when speaking, which can convey a range of emotions and attitudes.

A leader's tone can either inspire confidence, trust, and respect or create a sense of fear, mistrust, and resentment. A leader who speaks with a positive and enthusiastic tone can energize their audience, boost morale, and foster a sense of optimism and empowerment. On the other hand, a leader who speaks with a negative, critical, or hostile tone can demotivate their followers, erode trust, and create a sense of disillusionment.

Moreover, a leader's tone can convey their emotional state and level of engagement, which can impact the audience's perception of their credibility and commitment. A leader who speaks with a flat or disinterested tone can be perceived as indifferent or uninvolved, whereas a leader who speaks with a passionate and engaged tone can be seen as invested and committed to their message and their followers.

Tone is also important in conveying empathy and understanding. A leader who speaks with a compassionate and empathetic tone can make their followers feel heard and understood, which can help build trust and strengthen relationships.

In conclusion, effective leadership communication requires the mastery of different types of communication skills, such as verbal, nonverbal, written, listening, and feedback. Leaders must also have a communication strategy that incorporates these skills, such as the R.A.P.I.D model. The Bible also provides examples of effective communication strategies, such as using a gentle tone and approach to diffuse conflict, as found in Proverbs 15:1. A leader's tone is a crucial communication skill as it can set the tone for the overall communication, impact the audience's perception of the leader's credibility, commitment, and emotional state, and convey empathy and understanding. By mastering tone, leaders can create a positive and productive communication environment, build trust and respect with their followers, and inspire and motivate them to achieve their goals.
