How are individual members elected and re-elected? What do they actually do once they arrive in Washington, DC?

To be elected or reelected to the House of Representatives in the United States, candidates must satisfy certain qualifications outlined in Article I, Section 2 of the Constitution, include being at least 25 years old by the time they take the oath of office, having U.S. citizenship for at least 7 years, and being a resident of the state from which they seek election. Getting on the ballot for the House of Representatives typically involves primary elections in most states, where major party candidates are automatically included. Minor party candidates follow their partys rules, while independent candidates self-nominate and must satisfy various state requirements to be included on the general election ballot (Election of Representatives, 2023). Newly elected members of Congress are required to take care of pragmatic matters upon their arrival in the nations capital such as finding a new place to live and getting their utilities turned on.

Who are the leaders in Congress, and how do they get those positions? What role do they play in organizing and directing the work of...…into laws. The process begins with a representative sponsoring a bill, which is subsequently referred to a committee for evaluation. If the committee approves, the bill proceeds to a calendar for voting, debate, or potential amendments. To pass, the bill requires a simple majority in the House of Representatives, equivalent to 218 out of 435 votes. Following approval in the House, the bill advances to the Senate where a similar process ensues, with a simple majority (e.g., 51 of 100) being required for passage (The Legislative Process, 2023).
