1. Where do your managers, peers, and subordinates agree with your self-assessment? Where do they disagree? In what areas did you excel? In what areas would you most like to improve?
From the self-assessment, management, peers and subordinates agree with me a on a litany of items. I personally was very relieved to see that management, peers, and subordinates agreed with my assessments related to collaboration, judgement, positivity. Likewise, they all agreed with my assessments relating to problem, solving, coaching and communication. Each of the above elements consider a core competency within my overall professional abilities. For one, I espouse the belief that communication and team engagement are central to my teamwork skills. These skills have been supported and validated by my peers through this self-assessment.
Personally, from my prior work experience, many of my managers commend my ability to communicate with my peers. This is a critical element within my overall work environment. My first few jobs where in the retail and restaurant industry. Here, I was able to the learn the value of clear communication and how it eventually impacts the overall team dynamic. I have applied these communication skills throughout my work career and have attempted to further hone these skills within a leadership context. This is particularly true given the COVID-19 operating environment. Here, my current job has transitioned into a hybrid learning environment. This requirement requires constant and prolong communication throughout the course of the day. This is important as many teammates are now working from home and are looking to continue to operate efficiently within an online environment. I typically agree with my managers, as I look to communicate much more aggressively within these online environments. For one, communication as to what I am specifically working on has been very valuable within an online environment. More importantly, agree with managements assessment on my ability to effectively determine solutions. These solutions, particularly in an online format, are often derived through strong collaboration and teamwork skills. Here too, I agree with both the peer and subordinate evaluation of these elements (Andrade, 2008).
Finally, I am very proud that both subordinates and managers ranked my ethical skills very high. This is again very gratifying given the overall ethical needs presented during this COVID-19 labor environment. My teammates have consistently ranked my high from a ethical perspective as I look to exemplify high ethical standards with all of my work products.
As it relates to areas of disagreement, I scored relatively low on elements such as searching for new idea, sharing expertise, and participating in professional development associations. I disagree with these elements as I am heavily involved in professional organizations and have even taken leadership roles within them. Here, I believe the discrepancy is a result of many of my peers and subordinates not knowing that I am involved in these professional organizations and are therefore unable to properly substantiate the assessment. However, I have heavily involved in the local chapter of Toastmasters which looks to improve overall public speaking and communication skills for young professionals. I also disagree with the overall assessment from both management and my subordinates. I also believe that I am a very strong team player. I am very willing to provide and disseminate relevant technical expertise to others. However, from the management perspective, much of this is unnoticed as these contributions are not readily promoted to management. As a result, many of the contributions made, management is not fully aware of and therefore are unable to properly assess. Here, I disagree with the assessment and believe it should be higher relative to my contributions to the organization and the manner in which I share relevant information with both management and subordinates.
As it relates to areas in which I excel, the best elements are both my collaboration, teamwork, and communication skills. This where all substantiated by both management and subordinates during the evaluation. As noted above, I excel in these areas primarily due to my training very early in my working careers. Much like other teenagers, I worked in fields related to retail, restaurants, and customer service as a younger teenager. These skills often required strong communication skills, along with a service-oriented mindset. I have leveraged these elements to ultimately improve and hone these skills of years of practice. I have also looked to improve these skills through professional organizations such as toastmasters. All of these elements have combined to create strong elements in which I can excel at within both a learning and work environment.
As it relates to areas that I would most like to improve, all area my financial and business acumen I would like to improve. Here, I believe business acumen will be critical as business environments are now much more dynamic. As a result, the need to have a strong problem solving, change management, and business fundamentals will be critical. Although I receive high marks related to my ability to diagnose problems, and learn from mistakes, it is important to continue to improve these element’s. For one, business is not static and therefore requires a much more robust and dynamic framework from which to operate from. Likewise, it is important to continue to learn as businesses continue to evolve. As a result, I aim to continue to improve my underlying business skills to better preform in a much more dynamic operating environment.
2. Evaluate of Results from the MindTools Assessments. In what areas did you excel? In what areas would you most like to improve? Make sure that you express results for individual elements as percentages.
When reviewing the mindtools assessment, my time management and self-motivation skills where very good. From a specific perspective the Mindtools Assessments gave me high marks in the categories of goal setting and prioritization. These skills have been established over many years of practice and honing. For one, I have also been involved in multiple activities at a given time. As a result, the need to prioritize and set goals in imperative. I am also very competitive both within and without the work environment. This has allowed me to engage in a manner that allows me to prioritize my time in the most productive and efficient manner. Likewise, based on the assessment, I heavily minimize procrastination, which is year another benefit that allows me to retain focus on specific tasks. Finally, due to the many activities that I am involved in, I scored high on the scheduling component of the assessment of well. Here, technology has been a large benefit as it allows me to properly schedule activities, reminders and notes all within an online environment.
As it relates to improvement, I would like to improve my overall stress management scores. When taking the burn-out assessment it appears that I often take on too many responsibilities at a given time. Here, according to the assessment, I am highly susceptible to burnout, which can ultimately result in health issues. To improve my score on this element, I will to minimize my activities in fields that are not related to my core goals or focus. Having a much more concentrated activity base will allow me to avoid many of the health concerns related to burnout while also allowing me to concentrate on critical activities.
Although I scored relatively high on the leadership calculations, this is another element that I would like to improve. For one, leadership is quickly evolving as business becomes much more international in nature. Here, I would like to better improve my overall cultural understanding as it relates to leadership from an international perspective. Due in part to globalization, many different cultural backgrounds will be represented. It is important to have quality leadership skills that will allow me to better lead individuals from various cultural backgrounds. I am also looking to improve this element through living and working for organizations that allow for international relocation.
3. Evaluate of Results from the Peregrine Pre-exam. In what areas were your results the strongest? In what areas would you most like to improve?
From the peregrine pre exam, I scored the highest on the management, operations, and production management topics. Here, I scored high on the sampling and data analysis subtopics along with the management decision making subtopics. Here, I was somewhat surprised on the data analysis score as I have historically been weak in this subject. I also scored high on the business ethics topic, further indicating my strong ethical standards within the work environment.
As it relates to areas of improvement, I surprisingly scored low on the organizational behavior topic. Here I missed many of the questions related to organizational design and structure. I also scored low on the subtopics related to organizational culture. This was surprising considering the prior assessments where I scored very high on elements related to aspects that are known to improve corporate culture. These aspects include strong communication skills, the ability to help train and develop other employees, and the ability to properly problem solve. Even when taking these aspects into account, my scores where low. As a result, these areas will need improvement going forward.
Also surprising, given my personal involvement within the field, I scored low on business leadership. This too is surprising given the level of investment that I have given to this field of study. When reviewing the assessment, I scored low on the leadership development, power, and legitimacy subtopics. This again was surprising given my strong communication skills. Here, it has shown the ability to transition my communication skills into properly leadership and problem-solving skills as indicated by my assessment above. However, the power and legitimacy subtopic may be warranted given that I am just starting my career and therefore have to establish these areas with my leadership competencies.
