Current needs in healthcare are rapidly changing as a result of technological advances, cultural transformations, economic and social deterioration, and other variables that are impacting the modern world in the 21st century. Yet, adequate services are not always available via the current roles in nursing. For instance, the demand for telehealth and eHealth is growing in the Digital Era and can be an effective means of overcoming obstacles of time and distance -- yet there are few infrastructures in place to actually assist this type of service or provide nurses with the support system needed to make this type of care possible and effective. For this reason, the roles of the NP, CNS, CNM, CRNA, nurse educator (NE), nursing informaticist (NI) and nurse administrator (NA) are not reflective of our current needs in healthcare.

5). The economy has yet to really recover from the 2008 crash, credit bubbles are everywhere, and technology has outpaced the sector in terms of what type of care nurses can now deliver. The role of the NP, for instance, is to provide advanced-practice care by prescribing medication, performing diagnoses, and treating patients with illness as well as focusing on prevention methods. They can act independently -- but in today's economic and social environment where independence is hard to achieve and demand is high for quality care, the nurse practitioner serves only a limited role in meeting the needs of today's healthcare world. The NP cannot provide specialized care, for instance, or utilized telehealth interventions if there is no system in place to support her.
CNS nurses on the hand can provide specialized care but, again, in today's Digital Era the demand for specialized care vs. ordinary, basic needs care -- for example, for elderly populations -- is an issue that deserves attention. Additionally, the amount of education that one must achieve before being able to perform specialized medicine can be a major obstacle for many nurses seeking to provide such care, which only aggravates the issue of how to address current needs in healthcare.
