While we know that global warming would no doubt, at the levels Epstein cites, be conditions for increased disease and even death; there is no sufficient data to suggest that global warming is going to reach the levels that Epstein is suggesting in his article. His article is alarmist in nature.
Schneider's (2002) article, in contrast to Epstein's, relies heavily on scientific data, pointing out that existing data is inconclusive as to what the future of global warming is (pp. 62-65). Schneider, who conveys the sense that he is resisting the temptation to be alarmist, is holding onto the principles of science, maintaining that there is insufficient evidence with which to make predictions on the future of climate changes at the levels discussed in the Kyoto Protocol.or that of a "non-scientific" study which is the focus of Schenieder's argument on the lack of evidence to support much of the published...
While both men hold the credentials to be credible, lay persons must be aware of the direction from which the information being provided them is coming from, because people are reacting based not on the information, but on the credibility of the person projecting the information.
While the public does need to be aware, it does not necessarily need to be alarmed. Also, there is a costly industry arising out of global warming; and there is talk about taking counter-warming measures that are frightening, because we do not at this point even understand the impact of what we looking at as concerns global warming. Yet we hear people, like former Vice President Al Gore, talk about weather control and experiments to counter global warming. The idea that people might be supporting industry in attempts to control or alter weather patterns for profit, because of the alarmist and false information that they are receiving, should at this time be the first and foremost concern to us.
Schneider is advocating caution; caution in making unsubstantiated assertions in predicting future weather conditions, and caution in how people react to and interpret the vast amounts of information being made public on global warming that are not supported by sound, scientific research.
