Protecting The Environment Through Effective Programs Essay

Environmental Protection Program Environmental protection is one of the major issues in the contemporary society given the increased negative impacts of human activities on the environment. In light of numerous industrial activities that have characterized today's production processes, environmental protection has attracted significant attention from governments, policymakers, businesses, and the public. These concerns have been accompanied by the development and implementation of various environmental protection policies and programs. These policies and programs are developed by policymakers, governments, and businesses in order to ensure that their operations generate environmental benefits rather than harm. An example of environmental protection programs with considerable impacts on manufacturing facilities, the society, and the environment is The Pollution Prevention Pays (3P) program.

Summary of The Pollution Prevention Pays (3P) Program

The Pollution Prevention Pays program was created by 3P in 1975 as a concept of pollution prevention. This concept emerged from the fact that pollution prevention is more environmentally effective, economical, and technically reasonable as compared to the traditional means of utilizing pollution control equipment ("Sustainability In-depth: The Pollution Prevention Pays (3P) Program," n.d.). Therefore, this program seeks to eliminate pollution at the origin through reformulation of product, changes to processes, redesign of equipment, and recycling and reusing waste materials, which is regarded more effective than conventional pollution controls.
The 3P Program has continued to significantly influence manufacturing facilities given its suitability for integration into business procedures and organizational culture. Actually, the program has a coordinating committee consisting of representatives from engineering, laboratory, and manufacturing organizations. The impact of the program on manufacturing facilities is its contribution to the efficient use of manufacturing resources and materials. This essentially means that manufacturing facilities use the program as the premise for identifying materials and resources with minimal to no environmental impact. These facilities proceed to utilize the identified resources and materials in an efficient manner to ensure their operations are environmentally sound. This impact on manufacturing facilities is also attributable to the strong commitment from top management to include the objectives programs in their operations through creating technically reasonable, cost-effective means for their operations.

With regards to the society, this program incorporates measures towards preventing air pollution, solid-waste creation, and water pollution. The reductions in these various aspects are compared with environmental releases of the project's first year. This helps in ensuring that the…
