The purpose of this study is to evaluate the “quality of education” in higher education institutions using Batumi State Maritime Academy-BSMA as an example (Diasamidze et al., 2019, p 54). Problems of higher education and how to improve the quality of graduates are also addressed. It is important to train individuals who would be competitive in the job market. However, the education system is different around the world - which makes the approaches of training students to be different. This in the end makes the quality of education offered to be different. The participants in this study are the students and teachers from BSMA. Sociological research on the academic performance of the students was monitored. The sample for this research was taken from Batumi State Maritime Academy. This academy functions as an educational facility and is a prestigious educational institution that is specialized and accredited by the state. Batumi State Maritime Academy provides qualified personnel for maritime transport infrastructures, cruise companies and commercial fleet. The setting of this study is in Batumi, Georgia. The study was conducted between 2016 and 2019 to monitor the performance of students in education.
Research design in quantitative analysis
The research design used in this study is correlational design. Statistical data is used to show the relationship between variables. The variables cannot be controlled. In this study, there is a strong relationship between academic performance and the medium used. In the first category, the seafarer was in the first place because the activity was carried out in his specialty. Diasmidze et al. (2019) point out that “the total number of students is distinguished by medium and high academic performance (55).” In the survey, the percentage value of the number of students distinguished by academic performance and medium is high.
Research design in qualitative analysis
The qualitative design that is used in this study is case study. To understand why there was a decline in the performance of students, a case study was conducted on the learning and the teaching process. Checklists within the departments of marine ecology, information technology, chemistry, physics and mathematics were prepared. It involved attending lectures randomly, and also involved at least three lecturers. The aim of the case study was to study the weaknesses and the strengths of lectures and later give recommendations after reviewing with a lead lecturer.
The method used for this research was survey method, whereby a student survey was carried out to monitor the process of education. This gave the quantitative analysis of the report. Questionnaires were also used, whereby the strengths and weaknesses of lectures were reviewed, recorded and recommendations given. In qualitative analysis, observation method was used whereby the learning process and teaching process were monitored comprehensively. Questionnaires were also administered to assess the aspects of lecture.
Quantitative: A statistical analysis
Chi square- Used when distinguishing between two variables. In this analysis, the interim assessment and the final assessment for the academic years 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 was distinguished in terms of the maximum and the minimum scores (pg, 56).
Qualitative analysis
Point of focus- This is whereby a small group of participants is carefully selected to represent a larger group in a research. In this study, three lecturers were selected to represent other lecturers in universities. The learning process was monitored by determining the strengths and weaknesses of lectures.
Results
The index of positive results is 89.5% for the academic year 2016-2017, that is distinguished by high academic performance and medium. For the academic year 2017-2018, the index of positive results is 87.6% also distinguished by medium and high academic performance (55-56). The total number of students were 806 and the teachers were 3. From the study, there is a decline in the performance of students from the first semester to the second semester. In secondary findings, the results of students for the first semester of academic year 2018-2019 showed great improvement in terms of academic performance.
