Universal care involves balancing activity and rest to prevent hazards to human life functioning and well being. It involves eating and breathing which are two things that these men can do on their own and are quite capable of doing.

Universal health care needs as they relate to the movie family and the Orem theory include maintaining air, water and of course food. In addition the ability to excrete as well as balancing rest and activity. The final step of this part of the theory includes balancing solitude and social interaction.

Max and John both participate effectively and successfully in the Universal health care aspect of the Orem theory. They eat, rest, socialize and have alone time in healthy and acceptable amounts.

Developmental health care with regards to the Orem theory include the need to meet the changes in conditions that could affect human development and life in a negative manner. One classic example of this in the movie is the fact that they are elderly men which means blood pressure monitoring and medication needs.

A less obvious measure of self-care regarding developmental care is in the ability to make and keep doctor appointments for the purpose of checkups and monitoring already diagnosed conditions that may worsen with the aging process.

Health Deviation Self-Care Requisites for the purpose of analyzing this movie family are almost non-existent. Both men are considerably healthy and free of disease though several references...

The family structure is one of a blended and blood family by choice. The two main characters are friends who have argued for 35 years and their two children are in love and marrying. In addition John is now married and they all believe Max would benefit from finding a love interest of his own to lighten his heart. Structurally the family could be called lineal or joint because it has elements of both within its circle. Health care issues are minimized most likely because the movie is a comedy but even within those narrow boundaries there are examples of self-care requisites that can be applied to the Dorothea Orem's theory of self-care.
CONCLUSION

There are several components to the Dorothea Orem health care theory of nursing. Universal health care, developmental health care and health care deviations are all components of the theory that can be applied to the family analysis in the movie Grumpier Old Men.

The characters in the family fit the mold for Orem's theory points and they can be picked out and analyzed to determine the health and well being of the characters based on their self initiated activities that are for the purpose of enjoyment and maintenance of life. This movie provides a strong model family for the purpose of measuring health of characters as measured against the Dorothea Orem theory of health care.
