Business asks for formal communication, which entails official and technical writing. The basis of writing should be founded on learning what is relevant to the topic and who has explored the topic before the business writer himself. Literature, theory, and social research are three fundamental that lay the groundwork for business and technical writing.

The literature review is important since it discerns who has investigated the research question before and what evidence he has been able to find beforehand (“Understanding the Role of Literature Review,” n.d.). The researcher must know about the previous research and what purpose was served in the prior studies, the perspectives laid down by the early scholars, and the approach to conclude. It also offers the gaps that the current research would aim to investigate that were not discussed in detail with consistent controversies. Also, keywords play a major role in identifying the desired research type. The keyword inclusion would direct the required research to be found so that online databases, libraries, and all pertinent Internet sources only look for the specific data. For this purpose, library catalogs are widely used. Numerous books are shelved that are hard to find otherwise, but with the catalog, the titles, authors, and topics are convenient to look for. Although today’s colleges and universities might hold a restricted number of topics and relevant authors, the index card drawers and handbooks could help. The students generally search academic journals, magazines, and daily newspapers within the library stacks through handbooks. Again, keywords or the topics must be contemplated before searching for the actual previous evidence in any form.

After the appropriate research is located comes the next step of selecting a theory depending upon whether the current research is quantitative or qualitative. It outlines the pathway that the research should adopt. The theoretical perceptive is naturally tested with the undertaken study. The patterns, correlation, and generalizations are tested with both types of research (“Chapter 3: The Use of Theory”, n.d.). Certainly, the next approach is to choose variables that need testing under carefully chosen tests. The variables- dependent and independent- are crafted with an alignment of the purpose statement and research question. Sometimes, intervening variables are set that support statistical mediation analyses. They serve as an outside phenomenon that might impact the final research outcomes. If-then statements help conceive theories within the research to visualize the variables’ interdependence in reality.
