Still, culturally and politically, life revolved around Rome, which was the largest megalopolis in the Ancient World, estimated between 1 and 3.5 million people. This was the central commercial hub for the empire, and relied on a strong logistical technology for acquiring, transporting, storing, and distributing food for a large urban population; most of whom were not actually involved directly in agriculture. As a society, Rome borrowed heavily from Greece, but also from Egypt, although Egyptian power was waning. Since both Egypt and Greece borrowed from the Mesopotamian cultures (Sumer, Babylon, Assyria), there is a line of technology that goes from the earliest Mesopotamian civilizations through to Rome, then to the Middle Ages in Europe, and to contemporary culture (Freeman).
