Comparing and Contrasting Two Cities

New York City and Los Angeles are two of the largest and most vibrant cities in the United States. While both cities share certain similarities, such as their size and diversity, they also have distinct differences. The following is a point-by-point comparison of New York City and Los Angeles.

Firstly, although New York City and Los Angeles are two of the biggest cities in the US with cosmopolitan characteristics, diverse populations, and lots to do, there are some big differences between them—and one major difference between New York City and Los Angeles is their climate. While climate might not seem like a big deal on the face of it, the weather in each of these cities actually creates an immensely different and unique experience for the people in there. Because of where it lies in relation to the jet stream, New York City experiences cold winters and hot summers, while Los Angeles—due to its coastal climate on the Pacific—has a mild, Mediterranean feel with warm temperatures year-round. New Yorkers are used to heat waves in August and blizzards in January (Best Places). They know the extremes of weather conditions and feel them every year. This might even account for the toughness New Yorkers are known for: they are typically bold, direct, unapologetic, and upfront with their feelings, voices, and attitudes. Like their climate, they do not sit back but rather go hard all year round. So, surely, this difference in climate affects the lifestyle of the residents of each city. Angelenos, on the other hand, have a nice steady climate all year round, which might account for their laid-back “California” style and attitude. They tend to be more relaxed in their tones and easy-going in their deportment. LA’s climate and New York’s climate are considerably different—and even though both cities have huge, diverse populations—one sees snow and heat waves, and the other sees steady, mild weather month after month. That likely has a big impact on the attitudes and feelings of the people in each.

Secondly, another significant difference between the two cities is their geography. New York City is located on the east coast of the United States, while Los Angeles is on the west coast. This geographic difference has led to different cultural influences in each city. For example, New York City has a strong European influence, while Los Angeles has a more diverse, multicultural influence from Latin America and Asia (Foner; Tierney et al.). This makes sense as New York City was the first stopping place of immigrants coming over to America from Europe. People did not start making their way to California until much later, and Los Angeles (its very name has a Latin feel to it) was the prime destination for migrants coming to the US from Asia and Central America. Geography thus had a big part to play in the establishment of the diversity of these two cities. Their populations even today represent this geographical influence, with LA having more of a Latino influence and New York City having more of a European influence. However, that is not to say that LA doesn’t have a European influence or that NYC doesn’t have Latinos. Both do as well. New York City has its boroughs that are dominated by Latino populations, and LA has its European population, too, as it attracts people of all walks of life.

Thirdly, the two cities have different cultural identities. New York City is often seen as the cultural capital of the United States, with its renowned museums, theaters, and art galleries. Los Angeles, on the other hand, is known for its entertainment industry, with Hollywood being the center of the movie and television industry. However, New York also has its entertainment side: it has Broadway, where world-renowned theater can be found. That means that stage actors can also be found in NYC—just as they can in Los Angeles, which also has a theater industry. Thus, the two cities are alike in this regard, even as they differ in others. For instance, it still is the case that due to its heritage and older character, New York City\'s cultural identity is strongly linked to the arts and to some of the most renowned museums in the world, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Its architecture is also iconic, with buildings like the Empire State building being a huge draw every year. This cultural richness in New York City attracts a lot of tourists and artists from all over the world and has helped the city to earn its reputation as the cultural capital of the United States. On the other hand, Los Angeles is closely associated with celebrity culture, popular music, and film. The paparazzi tend to call LA their home as that is where the bulk of entertainment celebrities can be found. Actors looking for privacy tend to live elsewhere in the world. Los Angeles has a long history of being the hub of the entertainment industry, with the major movie studios and television networks based in the city. The city\'s vibrant nightlife, clubs, and music scene are also reflective of its cultural identity. Due to the presence of the entertainment industry, there are more job opportunities available in the fields of film and television production, music, and fashion in Los Angeles than in New York City—even though a century ago there was a budding film industry on the east coast as well (Wolfe). These differences in cultural identity are also reflected in the types of neighborhoods and communities that exist in each city. In New York City, there are neighborhoods such as SoHo, Chelsea, and the Upper East Side that are known for their art galleries and museums, while in Los Angeles, neighborhoods such as Beverly Hills and West Hollywood are known for their connection to the entertainment industry and celebrity culture.
