DNP 8000: Health Systems Development and Leadership Practice Immersion Experience - Self-Assessment
My experience with the DNP 8000 course has been enlightening to say the least; for me personally I feel that I have been given a solid understanding of health systems development and what leadership must look like within the nursing profession. I feel much more confident on my path forward than I did at the beginning of the course—and that is always a good sign that the course was effective. With this paper, I will reflect on the Course Level Student Learning Outcomes, some of the End-of-Program Outcomes, and the Leadership Role-Specific Competencies that I acquired as a result of this course.
Self-Assessment
The DNP 8000 course has been an enormous help in my mission to my grow my skills, my knowledge, and my ability to bring theory and practice together in my real-world nursing experience. The DNP essentials, moreover, have been an excellent guide with respect to focusing on the nurse executive role-specific competencies that have been the backbone of my learning experience. Some areas of this course that stand out as particularly relevant for me include the following.
Course Readings and Discussion Threads
The readings for me are what provided the framework for my experience: they were like the welcome guide—and I was the visitor. They introduced me to the goals and showed me around, and I felt like I was able to get a good understanding of where I was to be going thanks to them. They often gave me a strong theoretical foundation that I could stand upon to make sense of real-world issues in nursing, and all the different discussion threads helped me compare my experiences with others and brought all of our real-world experiences into a fuller perspective (thanks to the application of theory). For example, I recall having a discussion on patient-centered care in a multicultural setting, which made me realize the importance of cultural competence, and this aligned with DNP Essential II: Organizational and Systems Leadership for Quality Improvement and Systems Thinking (Giardino & Hickey, 2020). It was a flashing ah-ha moment for me—wherein everything seemed to click and fall into place. What we were learning and experiencing was not compartmentalized and tucked away each into its own silo; rather, it was all together, everything feeding into everything.
Leadership Shadowing Experience
I also gained a lot of good insight from shadowing experienced nurse leaders in the field. There is just something about observing a nurse leader and getting able to work in the field alongside that leader at the same time that really resonated with me. It gave me hands-on experience while also served as a kind of mentor opportunity: I was there working in the field but was also supported by a leader at the same time. That is the type of experience I am most thankful for. I could see first-hand great examples of the importance of effective communication and collaboration, and examples that reflected the Leadership Role-Specific Competency on conflict resolution and negotiation (Beasley & Ard, 2021).
Collaboration with Mentors and Professors
Of course, I also had my mentors and professors in the classroom setting as well. My interactions with my mentor and professor were always informative and enlightening. The feedback I received on my course work was great and helped me focus specifically on how to bring evidence-based practice into my viewpoints. This experience really brought home to me the meaning of DNP Essential III: Clinical Scholarship and Analytical Methods for Evidence-Based Practice (Kesten et al., 2022).
Practicum Project Thesis
My project on allowed me to apply theoretical knowledge into practice, which honestly is not something I ever anticipated doing in such a focused way. For instance, I used leadership strategies to engage a team of nurses, which reflected my understanding of the Leadership Role-Specific Competency on team leadership and collaboration (Matsuda & Watanuki, 2023). This was really a break-through for me simply in understanding how to bring the classroom science into the field work science.
Overall, the DNP 8000 course has been a great help and I now view it as a substantial cornerstone of my personal, academic and professional growth. It has given me new knowledge and understanding, and a lot of experiences to reflect on, and it has also helped me sharpen my leadership skills. I feel more prepared today than ever before for the challenges and responsibilities that a nurse executive must handle. The body of theoretical knowledge, the practical experiences, and the mentorship I received has made me more confident and I fully feel like I am ready to be a leader in the nursing profession and healthcare systems.
DNP Practicum Project Team Mentorship Reflection
My experience collaborating with my DNP Practicum Project team mentor has been a nice aspect of my academic path forward. I felt from day one that this partnership was going to be positively instrumental in shaping my growth towards accomplishing my academic goals and bringing me success in the DNP program. I was right for so many reasons. First, I received expert guidance—but also many other things as well.
My mentor brought me a sense of experience and expertise that I did not yet have, so that was the main big thing for me: it was a great help just in being able to see through the eyes of one who had been there before. I obtained insight into both research and the field of the nursing profession. This guidance really brought a big light to my practicum project, and I felt good about being able to be open and honest and about the challenges I was facing. I always knew I would be met with a well-informed perspective.
And while the course readings and lectures helped lay the theoretical foundation for me, my mentor was the bridge to real-world application. The practical insights and experiences helped me see that theory does have a place in practice and can be implemented—and, moreover, that if theory has no application it really is not much good as a theory (Graf et al., 2020; Lee & Kang, 2020). So it was helpful to always keep that in mind.
One of the most significant benefits of this collaboration has been the continuous feedback loop. My mentor always gave me constructive criticism, which was helpful in refining my work for the better. I saw too how this feedback was helping me make sure my work aligned with the highest standards of the nursing profession. This feedback process showed me that a culture of continuous improvement was truly part of this course and that drove me even more to strive for excellence.
But beyond all that—beyond the immediate scope of the practicum project—and something I was truly grateful for was the fact that my mentor introduced me to a network of professionals within the nursing field. I am sure that these connections will be invaluable as I progress further in my career, and I look forward to seeing how they might lead to new open doors and opportunities for collaborations that would have otherwise probably remained inaccessible.
On a personal note, I would say that my mentor has been a source of inspiration. The dedication, intelligence, and commitment to the nursing profession gave me more incentive to grow. This mentorship has helped me achieve academic success and personal and professional growth, and it has given me a sense of the values, ethics, and responsibilities that come with being a nurse.
My experience in the DNP 8000 course and the subsequent collaboration with the DNP Practicum Project team mentor has been enormously helpful. The course has given me a solid foundation in health systems development and leadership, and has shown the importance of being able to bring theoretical knowledge into practical experiences. The discussion threads, leadership shadowing, and interactions with mentors and professors—all of it also enriched and supported this learning experience, so that by the end of it I felt I had a holistic understanding of the nursing profession's many different facets. In addition, the mentorship I received during the practicum project was, I can easily say, an effective cornerstone for my personal growth as it helped give me confidence in myself. It was also a boon for my academic and professional growth. The mentor's guidance was always insightful and supportive, and it helped me close the gap between theory and real-world application. As a result I could create for myself an environment of learning and improvement that gave me confidence. I used that invaluable feedback, and took advantage of networking opportunities, and thus have come out much further along in my own path than I ever imagined. Overall, I would have to say that the DNP 8000 course and the mentorship experience have been huge in making me into the well-rounded, competent, and informed nursing professional that I aim to be. My experiences in this course have allowed me to hone my skills and deepen my knowledge, and they have given me a greater and deep sense of responsibility as a nursing professional. My path will continue forward, but the lessons I have learned in this course and the relationships I have made will always be with me, helping me along.
