Background and Experiences

Since an early age, I have been fascinated by the complex systems and processes of life that biology unraveled. This innate curiosity led me to pursue a biology degree from one of the prominent universities in Jordan. Post-graduation, I found my passion in not just understanding biology, but also imparting this knowledge to others. This realization guided me towards my current profession as a P-12 biology teacher.

Now, I am in my second year of teaching biology, and I find the experience both challenging and rewarding. My student demographic is diverse, with a considerable number of English as a Second Language (ESL) students. Teaching biology to ESL students is a unique challenge due to the language barrier, and it pushed me to become more creative and intuitive with my teaching methods. This diversity has enriched my teaching experience and given me invaluable insights into different cultures, learning styles, and communication methods. It has shaped my understanding of inclusive and effective teaching and instilled in me a desire to further my professional expertise in education.

Reason for enrolling in the MSED program

My teaching experience with ESL students inspired me to further enhance my teaching techniques and strategies. I believe that enrolling in the Master of Science in Education (MSED) program would equip me with the necessary skills to provide a comprehensive learning environment to all students, irrespective of their linguistic or cultural background. I aim to build upon my existing competencies and integrate more effective teaching methodologies into my practice.

One person who has significantly inspired me is my mentor and former biology professor from Jordan. Her dedication, passion for teaching, and ability to make complex biological concepts easy to understand, have made a lasting impact on me. I aspire to emulate her teaching philosophy and contribute positively to my students' academic journey.

The modern-day school setting faces several challenges, and one that stands out in my context is linguistic diversity. My school hosts a significant number of ESL students, which poses a unique set of obstacles in delivering effective teaching. How do we ensure that these students don’t feel alienated due to their language proficiency? How do we incorporate their cultural and linguistic backgrounds into our teaching methods to create a more inclusive classroom?

To overcome these challenges, we need to equip our teachers with the necessary training and resources to cater to ESL students effectively. Teacher well-being is a vital but often overlooked aspect of the education system. The demands and stress of teaching can lead to burnout, impacting the overall quality of education. How can we ensure that teachers feel supported, valued, and cared for in their work environment? If teachers get burned out, the students end up being the ones who suffer as a result. Teachers need to feel supported so that they do not become exhausted by the challenges they face every day. It is very important that teachers be given time and space to reflect, recreate, heal, and grow.
