A personal mission statement helps a person to create a focus in their lives and to prevent the chaos that comes from living an overly busy, adrift and disorganized life. A personal mission statement helps a person to understand which long-term goals they are able to accomplish and which are beyond their rich. The mission statement will help to guide the person towards achieving the desired goals and to keep them on track to achieving the goal Zuckerman, 2005.

The personal mission statement helps to give live a focus and help the person to decide which critical activities they need to focus their time and energy on. My personal mission statement is to encourage, mentor and support individual members of society in their roles in order to help raise the quality of healthcare in the country.

A personal vision statement is important because it clarifies the direction and purpose of the day-to-day activities undertaken by the individual. It helps to create an avenue towards fulfillment in a person's life. They also assist in making important decisions and prioritization of activities in order to achieve the long-term goals set. Senge (2003)

states that a personal vision statement helps to create the individual and their surrounding thus leading to success in the day-to-day activities of the person. My personal vision statement is to help people enjoy their lives by providing them with holistic care to the best of my ability.

Personal goals are also important in life since they help to give clarity on the end vision. Hemingway and Maclagan (2004)

state that goals help to clarify what the person actually wants in the end. It helps to articulate the person's desires and to ensure they channel energy, time and effort in the prioritized activities for achieving the goal. Goals are the end vision for the personal mission and vision statements. A person's goals help to create personal accountability. By having personal goals, people become accountable since they know what they desire in life and how it can be achieved. They thus begin to focus on activities that help them achieve these goals. Goals need to be specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and time-specific. My primary goal for the next ten years is to live my life ethically at all times by abiding to social, moral and professional codes of conduct in my role. The second goal is to give at least one hour per day for my hobbies. Another goal is to learn at least one new thing every day.

Desired accomplishments for the next 10 years

My desired accomplishments for the next 10 years focus on helping me progress professionally and as an individual in the society. The accomplishments are divided into four major categories which are professional, intellectual, familial, and societal accomplishments. Professionally, I desire to become a leader of change in health care organizations by driving change to increase the quality of healthcare provided to patients. I also desire to provide clients with a sustainable optimum level of health and wellness. Intellectually, I look forward to advancing my education to the Master's and even Doctoral level. I also plan to spend time learning a new language in order to become a more culturally competent health care provider. On the family level, I would like to become more devoted to my spouse and to have children with who I spend quality time. Lastly, in the society, I want to abide by all moral and social rules to live an ethical life. I have chosen these accomplishments since I feel they are the achievable and they are most relevant...

...

These accomplishments will help me become successful and to occupy the position that I desire in society.
Activities towards fulfilling the accomplishment

Towards fulfilling these accomplishments, I plan to conduct various activities. The first is planning. In planning, I will research the specific details for each of the accomplishments. For example for achieving my Master's degree, I will find out the universities that provide the course and how much it costs. The second activity will be scheduling. This will involve creating time for each of the activities required for the accomplishment. For example for the hobbies, I will set the time for undertaking each hobby as either 1 hour before or after dinner. The last activity is the actual execution of the activities. This involves undertaking the specific activities towards the achievement of these goals.

Resources and leadership skills needed

To fulfill these accomplishments, I will need to create time for each of the activities. This will be done as part of the scheduling process for each activity. For example for undertaking my hobbies, I will create 1 hour for hobbies every day either before or after dinner. Another resource that is needed is money. For certain accomplishments such as the Master's degree, I will need money to pay tuition fees. There are also leadership skills that are needed. The first is decision making. This involves understanding the personal mission and vision statement and motivating oneself to stick to the schedule created. The second skill that is needed is passion. This involves inspiring oneself in order to create a drive towards achievement of the goals. Another skill that is required is delegation. In order to achieve success in improving the quality of care provided, I will need a team to which I will delegate certain duties. I will also need to be able to take ownership and responsibility for each of my actions. Even though some activities may be delegated, it is important to take responsibility for their outcomes.

Encouragement and barriers to development

There are various factors that can encourage or create barriers to development. One important one is friends. Friends can be either an encouragement or a barrier. Supportive friends would help in keeping me in line with achieving these goals and fulfilling my personal mission and vision. However, friends can also create peer pressure and derail me from the activities that help to fulfill these achievements. Team members can also be either an encouragement or a barrier. By collaborating with team members, it is possible to achieve more rather than by working as an individual. One the contrary, team members can create barriers by refusing to collaborate when their input is most needed.

Measurement of progress

Since the goals are measurable, they will be a need to create measurable milestones for each goal. Setting milestones involves creating smaller tasks for each of the goals. For example for the goal of achieving Master's level education, one milestone would be to have found and applied for the Master's program within the first year. Another milestone is to have found enough money to enroll into the college by the eighth year in order to finish the Master's program by the tenth year. These milestones help to divide the goals into sub-tasks which when done will result in achievement of the ultimate goal. By measuring the progress on achieving each of these milestones, it will be possible to measure the progress of achieving each of the goals. It will be possible to know when I have reached the goals since they are measurable and thus when they are reached, all milestones will have been achieved and the measurement of the goal show it has been achieved.

Biggest obstacles to success

One of the largest obstacles to success is the lack of finances. For instance tuition fees for any Master's program range in the hundreds of thousands of dollars which requires patience to save up or find financial aid through a university financial aid or scholarship program. This will create a huge burden in trying to cater for living expenses as well as saving for this goal. A second obstacle…
