movie proposals. These would be the mission for the firm and its basic proposals, the company's "must" objectives, the company's "want" objectives and the estimated ROI for each of the for movies. This report will evaluate each of the movies as perceived by the four criteria previously mentioned and will subsequently make an overall evaluation and reason the best choice for the company.
The first movie, "My Life with Dalai Lama," perfectly complies with the main ideas of the company's mission. First of all, from a creative point-of-view, the idea to present the life of a personality through the eyes of a snake and through the eyes of other animals befriending him is new, interesting and creatively a positive aspect. Further more, to some degree it is also championing environmental concerns by presenting the role of animals in the life of a personality of 20th century history, bringing the animal regnum closer to human heart.
In terms of the "must" objectives, it covers the first two. Indeed, the project would obviously meet legal, safety and environmental standards, while at the same time compelling with the PG or lower advisory rating criterion: a life about the Dalai Lama is in no way offensive or needing advisory content. The third criterion is, however, less likely to be met. Indeed, a life on the Dalai Lama will probably be offensive to the Chinese Communist authorities. As it is commonly known, Communist China has annexed Tibet in the 20th century and the exiled Dalai Lama is currently leading a consistent campaign so that Tibet's independence or at least autonomy be recognized. This may imply a refusal on implementing a theme park in mainland China by the Communist authorities and this is one of the main strategic drivers of the company for the future (expansion of thematic parks to certain countries).
The "want" objectives that could apply here are not thoroughly met. A movie about the Dalai Lama is not likely to bring an Academy Award, because in general biographic stories about historical personalities have not been receiving such an award (we can mention the case of Gandhi in the 80s, but that can be considered more of an exception than a rule). Even more so, few, if any, animated movies have received the Best Picture of the Year award in history. A movie about the Dalai Lama is also not the type of movie that would promote marketing devices that could bring additional income, things such as dolls, games or action figures: the Dalai Lama is not the type of hero that could fit such a category. The project could however score additional points when it comes to creating new technological features in terms of film animation.
The ROI criterion shows us a probability of 80% for a ROI of 8%. This is promising enough, but we need to consider the fact that this is the type of movie likely to convey only first-time revenues, as it will not generate any additional ones from related items or products. It also addresses a particular category of consumers rather than the bigger mass.
The second movie worth investigating, "Heidi," is not the type of movie that could score points in terms of creative wits: it is the remake of a movie, with basically the same idea and creative elements as the first one, including good music, breathtaking scenery and adorable Heidi. Additionally, it is a big-budget film, something which, if the film fails to be a big success with the masses, will most likely produce important financial damages for the company. Nonetheless, a movie with beautiful scenery, all filmed in the Swiss Alps, will support the environmentalist cause that the company has been lately sustaining.
All three "must" objectives of the company are met by the movie. There is no problem with advisory rating (a movie such as Heidi is never likely to bring about such problems), the legal, safety and environmental criteria are met and there is no immediate correlation between this project and the company's planned operations for the future.
In terms of the "want" objectives, "Heidi" passes out on all the animation-related points, but has a higher chance of winning an Academy Award for the Best Picture of the Year. The fact that it is a big budget movie and one that can afford top-name stars, correlated with a pleasant story is a recipe that has been adopted by many on their way to the biggest price in movie making.
As for the Return On Investment, this is small enough not to be considered or no to be taken into consideration. 2% is the most likely figure to come out of this project, and at best, although at best this could even reach 30%. As an opinion, a choice for Heidi could only be supported by the higher chance it can have at winning an Academy Award.
The third movie, "The Year of the Echo," seems to be the controversial type of movie, starting with the subject of the movie, its numerous controversial connections and the choice of a new wave director which could impregnate his style onto the creative side of the project.
As a first observation as related to the company's mission, from the four projects that are being analyzed, this is by far the most creative one. The presence of a new wave director is not the least important element that brings about this additional creativity. The movie is not actually impacting the environmental concerns that the company has been lately championing.
On the other hand, almost all three of the "must" objectives are compromised. First of all, there is no chance that the movie is likely to obtain a lower advisory rating, because, as mentioned, this is a movie with a highly controversial elements, with the presence of scenes containing heavy drug use, alcohol, stage acting etc. Second of all, the company has clearly followed an approach design to attract the family as a whole rather than isolated adolescents that may relate to this movie and become its fans. Such a project will probably impact the future development of the company by estranging the segment of consumer it has been traditionally addressing in time. It is doubtful that it will even be allowed the third criterion, referring to legal and safety standards: it is possible that authorities may consider some of the film's scenes as legally incorrect.
None of the "want" objectives will be reached by this project either. Chances for an Academy Award are rather slim. It is a low-budget movie and, despite notorious exceptions, this has not been the key to an Oscar success. It is not an animated movie, so it is not scoring any points there and it is certain to be spoiling the company's reputation, impacting on future revenues.
The ROI is quite impressive, ranking second at the 80% probability, which is something to be taken into consideration. This is the type of movie that may become an icon for all teenagers, no matter what the period of time we are referring to. This will bring revenues and royalties for a longer period of time than any of the other movies.
The fourth movie, "Escape from Rio Japuni," is, next to Heidi, the least controversial of all the four projects. Nevertheless, it touches a theme of concern for our century and of interest for the company as well: environmental protection and concerns. The mission of the company, including the environmentalist directives can be thoroughly followed, albeit with a lesser impact on the creative side (nevertheless, it is not a movie simply stating the need to protect nature and forests, but a movie that transposes the main idea and message in the animal characters it uses in this sense).
In terms of the company's "must" objectives, this is the project that is most likely to be able to fulfil all the three desiderates. Legal, safety and environmental standards are not endangered and it is not likely that the project will contravene with the no. 3 "must" objective referring to parallel current or planned projects. The movie also has a low advisory rating.
In terms of the company's "want" objectives, the most significant one that is likely to be sustained by this project refers to raising public consciousness about environmental issues and concerns: this is clearly a movie projected and promoted in this sense. Further more, because it is an animated movie, it can also fulfil many of the criteria involved here in terms of animation. For example, Pablo, the young jaguar, may become a reference animated character who can be a part of cartoons or TV series aimed at raising concerns about environmentalist issues.
The movie's ROI is not to be neglected either. With a range between 15 and 24%, it has the highest ROI for 80% probability from all the four projects proposed. It is important to note that such a movie may be the only one to correlate a moral/ethical cause…[continue]
